THE LAKE AND ITS ISLANDS

Description

The visit of Lake Trasimeno and its islands will be an unique and unrepeatable experience both on foot and by bicycle. You can appreciate all the marvels of this extraordinary place: you can visit the Medieval Castle, which was built to defend the ancient village; you can walk in the age-long olive groves, in which fine organic oil is produced; you can discover water lilies, iris and flowers of lotus in the Garden of the Aquatic Plants.

On the other hand, Isola Maggiore will give you memories of former times. Indeed you can visit here the Lace Museum in which you will find the following techniques:   “pizzo d'Irlanda” (Irish Lace)  and “pizzo d'isola” (Island Lace). These techniques were developed in Irish cloisters and  brought here by the marquise Elena Guglielmi.

In 1904 the woman founded a school to teach the lace technique to the fishmongers' daughters, who lived on the island. She entrusted this task to a Irish woman, who was an artisan. The women of the island skillfully continue to create table decorations,  tablecloths and inserts for sheets, sitting outside their houses. Moreover, Isola Maggiore represents one of the dearest places of Francis of Assisi. There is still now a statue made of bronze in the rock where the Saint moored in 1211. On this island, which is rich in history and spirituality, you can visit many places and you can hear many legends about the Saint.
