PERUGIA: TOWN OF TEMPLARS

Description

Walking into villages and castles, you will smell the scent of the colourful Umbrian hills and you will discover the secrets that shroud the Templar Order.

This Templar itinerary begins from the church of San Bevignate, which is situated along the royal street of Porta Sole,Monteluce district. The whole history of the place is revealed by the iconographical cycles that are depicted on the wall: The Procession of Flagellants, the Battle between Templars and Muslims and The Legend of San Bevignate. The most striking internal part is certainly the apsis, which is preceded by a majestic triumphal arch. The itinerary continues in the abbey of San Giustino d'Arna that is 15km far from the Umbrian chief town, towards Gubbio. The previous Benedictine cloister was the place in which conflicts and disputes between different forces took place but It is certain that the holy building was redeveloped by the Templars. Thanks to them a convent for nuns was built too.

You will end the tour visiting the castle of Knights of Malta that is situated in Magione. This is the residence of religious people but also of pilgrims who are going to Rome or to Holy Land. The castle has always been the summer residence of the Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta who normally spends the month of September here. That the Grand Master is in the castle is symbolized by the flag that flutters above the Medieval bell tower of the abbey, which once was called “ Badìa”.
